Garden City Harvest Market Plant Sale!!
On Friday, September 30, the Garden Club will hold a plant sale at the Market. Please start dividing and potting up plants that you can donate. Make sure you put a name tag on the plant. I believe I can come up with about 20 plants myself, but that isn’t enough – please help if you can. If you have plants that you can divide and share but not the ability to do the work, please let me know at least a week in advance and I will come to your yard!

Garden Club Field Trip
We have been talking about a Garden Club Field Trip and we just keep talking, but now we are going……next Friday for sure! Hope you join us when we go to the University of Michigan Nichols Arboretum Peony Gardens on June 7th 2013. We will leave at 9:30 for a fun filled day in Ann Arbor at the beautiful Matthaei Botanical Gardens!
We will meet at Maplewood Center Lot (Balmoral side) at 9:30 and car pool. Hope to see you there.
About The Garden
The University of Michigan Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden presents a stunning spring display, with over 270 historic cultivated varieties (cultivars) from the nineteenth and early twentieth century representing the best American, Canadian, and European peonies of the era. These fragrant spring beauties are arranged in 27 beds with each full bed containing 30 peonies. When filled to capacity the garden holds nearly 800 peonies and up to 10,000 flowers at peak bloom.Dr. W. E. Upjohn, founder of the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan, donated peonies to the University of Michigan in 1922. The peony garden itself was designed by former Arboretum director Aubrey Tealdi and opened to the public in 1927. The garden is located near the 1610 Washington Heights entrance to Nichols Arboretum.
The Nichols Arboretum is part of the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

April 27th Butterfly Garden Spring Cleanup & A Little History
Last Saturday, April 27th a few Garden City Garden Club (GCGC) members met
at 11:00 for our annual Spring clean-up at the Butterfly Garden. It was a
warm beautiful morning, we brought our shovels, rakes & clippers, dug in and
had a great time. Felt wonderful being outside and working in the garden
after a long winter! A big thank you to our volunteers: Della Haydon, Sue
Orzel, Cheryl Partin, Don Peterson, Ken Polzin, Dottie & John Vega!
While we were working in the Butterfly Garden, quite a few folks who were
walking in the park stopped to talk & inquired about the Butterfly Garden,
commenting how much they enjoyed seeing all the flowers and watching the
changes in the garden throughout the spring, summer & fall. It got us
talking about the history of the garden and how it all started many years ago.
Della Haydon, a past President of our GCGC and one of the original
founders of our club reminisced, and what an interesting story it is. It
seems back in the mid 1980's or early 1990's long time Garden City residents
& past Garden City Council member, Mary Jane Schildberg had an idea for a
flower garden at Garden City Park. Mrs. Schildberg got the plan in motion,
talked to her friend, Della Haydon, and it was decided that the Garden City
Garden Club would take on this wonderful community garden project. Many GCGC
members donated and planted perennials from their own gardens. Approximately
12 years ago, Dottie & John Vega were walking in Garden City Park and saw
the flower garden had been slightly neglected and inquired about it.
Learning that the GCGC "sponsored the garden, Dottie contacted the club and
signed up as a new member. What a wonderful decision that was, because
Dottie & her husband, John have taken on and maintained the "Butterfly"
garden for many years, coordinating the necessary clean up & weeding dates
with our Garden Club members. Through the years, you can see how the garden
has changed and how the different plants have matured and bloomed in the
garden. Our Garden City Garden Club also purchased and donated a beautiful
Bradford Pear tree, which is planted on the side of the Butterfly Garden. In
addition, the Garden Club added a bench, so walkers in the park could sit
down and enjoy the beautiful garden. The garden bench was made by the
autistic students at our local Cambridge Center.
Look for more information about the Garden Club and it's history
in an article to be in the Observer Newspapers soon.. Written by Cheryl P.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, we cannot have our Bake Sale at the Chili Cook-off this Saturday……. so, we are moving it over to the Fire Station.
Our Garden Club is hosting a BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER at the GARDEN CITY FIRE STATION 50th ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE on SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13th from 11:00 to 3:00. We will also be selling perennial plants that were left over from a Plant Exchange/Sale we had at the Farmer’s Market. This event is in conjunction with the Downtown Garden City’s 5th Annual Chili Cook-off. There will be lots to see and do, including tours of the fire trucks, Sparky the dog, hayrides between the Fire Station and the Chili Cook-off and much more! The Garden City Fire Station is located at 6000 Middlebelt Road. We invite everyone to come out & help support our community……bring the family, tell your friends about this event for a day of fun for the entire family!
Thank you to everyone who signed up to bring baked goods and will see you there on Saturday!
