ABOUT OUR GARDEN CITY GARDEN CLUB
At our monthly meetings, our club enlists gardening related speakers, promoting and enlightening members to all aspects of gardening. We encourage "green" alternative lifestyles, such as recycling, composting and water barrel retention. We also enjoy field trips, such as visiting botanical gardens and other garden related venues. Our field trips have included an afternoon at Heavenly Scent Herb Farm in Fenton, Mathai Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, the beautiful gardens at Henry Ford Estates in Dearborn and many many more wonderful adventures.
Our club sponsors a homeowner's "Garden Walk" every summer. This garden walk is our major fund raising event. We are always looking for beautiful gardens in the area, so please contact us if you would like to participate in a future Garden Walk. Or, if you know someone who has a lovely garden, please contact our Garden Walk Chairperson, Val at 734-427-7343.
Volunteer opportunities are encouraged and our club has participated in many community projects over the years. Every Spring we assist Garden City Downtown Development Authority (DDA) with the planting of the beautiful annuals around the "Commons" at Ford Road & Middlebelt and at City Hall. We planted and maintain the lovely Perennial Butterfly Garden in Garden City Park. You can enjoy a beautiful view of this garden when you drive down Cherryhill Road. And we also enjoy the holiday season and decorate one of the wonderful Christmas trees at Garden City City Hall. Our club members also volunteer at the Garden City Historical Museum gardens. We contribute and support World Gardening and the Blue Star Memorials. On the State level, we continue to support Loda Lake Wildflower Sanctuary on the western side of the State and the Grass Bay Nature Reserve on the eastern side. We also work very closely with the Nature Conservancy.
In the past we planted a Crimson Maple tree at the Garden City fire house to honor those police and fire fighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. We also planted approximately 3000 daffodils along the one mile walkway in City Park utilizing a matching grant from the Shell Oil P.E.T.A.L.S. Grant Program.
Our Garden City Garden Club also provides an annual $500 Scholarship to a local student, who is pursuing a college degree in horticultural, biological, or environmental studies. The State & National organizations also offers scholarships to students. We care about our youth and for our younger children we have the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Poster Contest.
Besides our club meetings, there are numerous functions within our Michigan Garden Clubs Inc. District I area. As club members, we are invited and encouraged to attend many state and national meetings, seminars, workshops and conventions. There are always a variety of interesting subjects to choose from and your ideas are always welcome.
HAPPY GARDENING AND HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON!
